October is national Energy Awareness Month. This year's theme encourages everyone to see themselves as a piece of the puzzle fitting into the big picture. This can be accomplished with everyone taking one extra step to reduce their energy consumption. Carpooling, turning off unused electronics and turning off the water when brushing your teeth are all great first steps to fit into the big picture.
In addition to the national Energy Awareness Month, Virginia is having it's annual ENERGY STAR® Sales Tax Holiday, where many Energy Star and WaterSense products are tax free. The 2009 holiday will take place Friday, October 9, 2009 and run through Monday, October 12, 2009.
During this period, purchases of certain Energy Star and WaterSense qualified products purchased for non-commercial use and costing $2,500 or less will be exempt from sales tax. Pick up Energy Star items such as dishwashers, clothes washers, refrigerators, air conditioners, ceiling fans, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and programmable thermostats and you won't pay sales tax.
The exempt WaterSense items include bathroom sink faucets, faucet accessories, and toilets. Retailers throughout the state will be participating. Retailers may also choose to absorb the tax on other items during the holiday period, but they are responsible for paying the tax on those items to the Department of Taxation.
For those residents who live in North Carolina, there's also an ENERGY STAR ® Sales Tax Holiday. It begins on Friday, November 6th and runs through Sunday, November 8th. Complete details can be found on the North Carolina Department of Revenue's web site.
For those residents who live in West Virginia, there's also an ENERGY STAR ® Sales Tax Holiday. It begins on Tuesday, September 1st and runs through Monday, November 30th. Complete details can be found on the West Virginia State Tax Department's web site.
