Lawrence A. Eckert Intermediate School in Aldine was awarded $1,000 for “Worm Café: Composting in an Urban Setting” to teach students about recycling and environmental awareness. The grant will fund a compost site at the school in which students will dispose of their lunch waste and monitor, facilitate, and teach others about the process. They will learn the types of organisms that decompose, the methods for taking care of the compost site and the positive effect recycling can have on the environment.
Mount Carmel Academy was awarded $1,000 to engage 9th and 12th grade Biotechnology 101 students in hands-on laboratory experiments. The students will study genetic engineering and DNA fingerprinting. This grant will help students develop a sense of their ability to employ the scientific method to solve real world problems.
