Calvert County Public Schools were
awarded $8,000 to support an energy program in 12 elementary schools and
six middle schools across the county. Fourth grade and 8th grade students will apply math and science
concepts that they learn to develop with the school system energy coordinator. They
will learn how to be energy-conscious and develop an energy conservation plan.
Calvert Middle School in Calvert County
was awarded $2,000 for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to build an autonomous
robot which will address problems with energy consumption and scarce natural
resources. The program will motivate students to explore education and
careers in science, engineering, math and technology. The program also
supports family and community involvement in science education.
Milton Somers Middle School in Charles
County was awarded $3,000 to help at-risk low achieving students by increasing
parental involvement with the program, “It’s Elementary My Dear.” At
a quarterly reading night, 6th through 8th grade students and their parents
will play science and math games and read books that will integrate math
and science concepts with language arts.
