Susan
Taylor is a sparkling "Daughter of the Sun." Overtime, she has emerged as a
prime example of what is true and beautiful in black American women: she radiates
intelligence, creativity and perseverance. Taylor was studying acting with New
York's renowned Negro Ensemble Company when circumstances forced her to seek
another career. Using the discipline she acquired while studying acting, and
her sharpness of mind, Taylor started her own business, Nequai Cosmetics.
Impressed by her success,
Essence Magazine hired Taylor as a free-lance writer in 1971. Two years later,
she was promoted to beauty editor, later her area of responsibility expanded
to include fashion.
In 1981, Taylor was elevated
to editor-in-chief and greatly contributed to the magazine's growth. She and
her creative editorial staff took the English language and used it to highlight
the essence of the black experience.
In 1986, this strong woman,
with her radiant and enigmatic smile, was elected vice president of Essence
Communications, Inc.
For four years in the 1980's,
Essence produced a television show that was seen throughout America and in some
Caribbean and African nations. This program highlighted issues affecting black
women everywhere.
In her own quiet and effective
way, Taylor has made a personal commitment to help people in poverty. She also
works with teenage mothers and imprisoned women, helping them acquire skills
that will enable them to take charge of their own lives and become stronger
women.
