1996 Honorees - Edward L. Hamm, Jr.

Edward L. Hamm, Jr.     Edward L Hamm, Jr. is the president of E. L Hamm and Associates, a management and engineering consulting firm located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This corporation provides architectural, engineering, logistics, audio visual and management services to both national and international clients.

Hamm was born in Virginia and was one of the first African-Americans to integrate its public schools. His family also instituted a lawsuit on his behalf to allow white and black youths to compete in interscholastic sports.

As a youth, he was greatly influenced by his parents, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President John F. Kennedy and Jackie Robinson. The ideal that he admired in them was their pursuit of excellence, and this character trait is deeply ingrained in him.

Hamm graduated from Hampton University with a bachelor of science degree in electronics. After graduation, he worked for a large corporation as a supervisor of its manufacturing engineering department. Next he worked for another corporation as an industrial engineering consultant. After other assignments, Hamm was hit with the entrepreneurial spirit and decided to enter business for himself.

Earlier, he had prepared himself for this new venture by obtaining additional training in computer science, management and communication systems. Then this entrepreneur gathered around him a core group of visionaries like himself, but with different skills, and formed a corporation. In a way, this experience was like mountain climbing, where a group of skilled and brave mountaineers start up the side of a mountain. When they reach certain levels and plateaus, they stop and evaluate the next climb and say to each other, "We can do that", and then proceed to do it.

In addition to being the chief operating officer of a corporation with employees and offices located around the world, Hamm is very active in his community. He is on fifteen boards and commissions ranging from the Hampton University Board of Trustees to the Governor's Task Force on Science and Technology. Whatever the endeavor, Edward L Hamm will perform the task excellently.
