Energy Efficient LEDs: A Bright Idea

LED lights are a great way to save on holiday displays.

LED (light emitting diode) holiday lights are a great way to increase electrical energy efficiency. You can find them at most retailers and the cost savings can be significant. Consider the advantages LEDs have over traditional incandescent lights:

LED lights come in an array of colors for any decorating need.

Efficient
LEDs save up to 98% of the electricity needed to power conventional painted or ceramic coated bulbs.

Economical
LEDs are typically a little more expensive than incandescents, but they virtually pay for themselves in the first year's electricity savings.

Brightness
LED flashlights are significantly brighter than traditional flashlights and are a great way to illuminate the path for young trick-or-treaters.

Environmentally Friendly
LEDs use less electricity, reducing carbon emissions and manufacturing LEDs is also more environmentally friendly. Since LEDs do not have a filament like incandescent bulbs, they require no glass or tungsten. Instead, electron movement in semiconductor chips causes illumination.

Durable
LEDs are encased in hard-to-break plastic versus the more fragile glass of incandescent lights. And because LEDs are electronic, they can last up to 10 years.

Practical
LEDs come in standard packaging of 25- to 100-bulb strands that can be connected together to provide a seamless string. And you won't have to replace individual bulbs--a plus all by itself!

Safe
LEDs generate much less heat so they're cool to the touch and are less likely to overload a circuit.

Attractive
LEDs come in traditional shapes, sizes and colors. Blinking and flickering LEDs are also available.

If all seasonal mini lights were switched to LEDs:

  • Electricity costs savings nationally would exceed $250,000,000.
  • Carbon emissions would be reduced by 400,000 tons per year.

Examples of LEDs in Use:

  • The Times Square New Year's ball is now fully illuminated by LED lighting. Even though it’s twice as bright as the old ball, it uses about half the energy.
  • Walt Disney World wired Cinderella’s Castle with over 200,000 LEDs--saving thousands of dollars.
