Easement Process and Agreements

An easement is a legal document signed by a private property owner giving Dominion permission to construct and maintain permanent Company facilities on his or her property. It is normal practice for Dominion to obtain easements and locate lines on private property. Before a project design and construction may begin, a right of way easement must be secured.

Information about our rights of way -

  • Underground 15' Right of Way - The normal width of rights of way to be obtained for an underground installation is fifteen feet. This width provides adequate clearance for the installation and maintenance of all underground electric facilities. View example.

  • Overhead 30' Right of Way - The normal width of rights of way to be obtained for an overhead installation is thirty feet. Trees near the edge of the right of way need to be trimmed from the ground to the sky. This provides adequate clearance for the installation and maintenance of all overhead electric facilities. Additional easement may be required for down guys. View example.   Easements that border a roadway must be at least fifteen (15) feet wide from center line towards the private property. View example.

An Underground Agreement is required prior to underground service installation. This Agreement outlines the terms and conditions that are applicable to providing underground service. It also contains any customer charges associated with providing underground service.
