Modern society has come to expect the business community to respond when social problems remain unresolved. Dominion accepts this challenge and views its philanthropic activities as an integral aspect of good corporate citizenship. We know that healthy, vibrant communities are essential to the long-term success of our business. That's why we work hard to build long-term relationships and valuable linkages with our stakeholders.

Because we are an energy company providing a vital public service, we have a strong and fundamental connection to the community. One of the ways we nourish that connection is by channeling resources to charitable causes in areas where we do business.

Dominion’s social investment program is carried out primarily through the Dominion Foundation. Our corporate giving program reflects the company’s interest in helping to meet demonstrated community needs and building strong community relationships.

The Foundation board of directors consists of company officers and philanthropy staff who meet periodically to review and set the Foundation’s annual budget, policies, and procedures.

In 2007, the Foundation donated almost $16 million to qualified 501[c]3 environmental organizations, educational institutions, cultural and community development groups, and health and human services providers in areas where Dominion has business interests. The Foundation's budget for 2008 is $20 million — double its level of giving in 2006.

Foundation grants support the preservation of valuable land and wildlife habitats; educational instruction in math, science and technology; multicultural diversity programs; food banks, homeless shelters and feeding programs; and cultural outreach efforts in the performing arts, among other things.

Gov. Tim Kaine tests a new kiosk.

In the spring of 2007, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine unveiled the first of 31 new state park information kiosks. The project was made possible by a grant from the Dominion Foundation.

In 2007, more than 1,100 nonprofit organizations in 26 states and the District of Columbia received financial support from the Foundation. Examples include:

  • Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business and School of Engineering capital campaigns;
  • Educational Partnership Grants for K-12 programs in parts of the Southwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast where Dominion does business;
  • The Gordon Square Arts District in Cleveland, Ohio, to support revitalization and economic development in one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods;
  • The Trust for Public Land, for the purchase and protection of 198 acres adjoining historic Jamestown, Va.; and
  • Trout Unlimited, for reclamation and conservation projects in West Virginia.

Dominion also has a matching funds program to encourage our employees to support eligible nonprofit organizations where they live and work. In 2007, the company provided more than $1.4 million in matching funds to almost 1,500 nonprofit and educational institutions in 49 states.

Giving to the community is good business. It is also the right thing to do.
