Dominion Donates $1 Million To Diversity Projects

Dozens of Virginia charitable organizations that support diversity projects are sharing $1 million in grants from company shareholders through the Dominion Foundation.

No Dominion Virginia Power ratepayer funds were used to make these donations.

Nonprofit education, culture, history and health associations received the grants because of their proven success in serving communities in Dominion's service area. Recipients include:

  • Robert Russa Moton Museum in Farmville to produce a documentary that marks the 60th anniversary of the 1951 student-led walkout. The walkout protested unequal education   facilities for African-Americans. The event played a major role in the American Civil Rights movement.
  • Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Foundation to develop and implement educational programs that promote a balanced account of Virginia's role in the Civil War.
  • CenterStage in Richmond to mark the 50th anniversary of the Thalhimer lunch counter sit-in, where Virginia Union University students staged a protest against segregation.

Dominion, its charitable foundation and employees invested more than $20 million and 125,000 volunteer hours in 2009.
