Dominion's co-op program engages college students for paid
work sessions that involve projects or assignments that are closely related
to a student's area of study.
The college
or university must have a formal co-op program and students must be participating
in their school's program.
Generally,
work experiences may relate to college credits earned and may be required
to satisfy degree or graduation requirements.
Students will participate in 3 to 5 rotating work sessions
in the Spring, Fall, or during their Summer break.
If a student attends an institution that allows "parallel" co-op
arrangements, the student may work on a full or part-time basis during the
school year while taking one or more classes.
Work sessions are structured, supervised, professional, and
relate to the student's area of study. These experiences allow students to
sharpen
their skills, develop a network of contacts, assess their strengths, and test
classroom theories in real world settings.
Students participating in Dominion's co-op program become
more marketable when seeking full-time employment at the Company. While a full-time
position cannot be guaranteed after graduation, the work experiences gained
through cooperative work will be invaluable.
Pay Rates
Co-ops are
paid on an hourly basis and may qualify for a monthly housing stipend. Co-op
pay rates are based on established college starting rates. College starting
rate projections are gathered annually from survey sources such as the College
Placement Council and Edison Electric Institute. Co-op pay rates are calculated
as a percentage (between 60 and 90 percent) of the applicable college starting
rate for the particular academic discipline.
Students progress through the co-op pay rate
schedule based on the number of employment work periods at the company. Students
may receive credit for related work experience with another company and for
additional related education when determining the pay rate at which the student
is initially placed into the program. The Company's co-op pay rates are reviewed
and adjusted each year.
Work Schedules
The program requires students to work at Dominion
for a minimum of three sessions. During each session, the student is expected
to work each regularly scheduled workday. Students participating in the program
understand that their participation as a co-op student may extend the length
of time needed to complete their academic careers and attain their degrees.
The
normal workweek at Dominion is 40 hours. However, since the Company
provides flexible work schedules, the business unit or department may
be able to provide flexibility in determining the student's actual
work schedule.
