Dominion Employees Volunteer Time, Energy to Environment
RICHMOND, Va. -- More than 400 Dominion employees in five
states volunteered Tuesday to help beautify their communities by working at
schools and parks to create nature trails, gardens and environmental education
centers.
The projects are part of a multi-state volunteer effort,
"Dominion Volunteers: Putting Our Energy to Work for the Environment." They
represent an ambitious effort by Dominion employees in Virginia, North Carolina,
Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia to improve the communities where they live
and work, and to heighten environmental awareness.
"The Dominion family of companies and their employees share
a special bond with their communities and a deep commitment to protecting our
natural heritage," said Thos. E. Capps, chairman, president and chief executive
officer. "Through daily corporate responsibility and volunteer efforts such
as 'Putting Our Energy to Work for the Environment,' we continuously breathe
fresh air into those commitments.
"The projects completed today will provide greater public
access to natural areas, enhance the educational opportunities for children
and deepen community pride."
Company employees selected the projects after working with
local officials to determine where their efforts could have the most impact.
Dominion provided money to pay for materials and loaned tools and equipment.
The projects are:
- Creating a learning garden as part of the continuing
"School Grounds as Community Parks" initiative in Cleveland.
- Cleaning, planting trees and constructing trails at Lowndes'
Hill Park in Clarksburg, W.Va.
- Trimming overgrown shrubbery and cleaning a brick walkway
at historic Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.
- Building a canoe storage facility at Leesylvania State
Park in Woodbridge, Va.
- Building an outdoor classroom at Munden Point Park in
Virginia Beach, Va.
- Constructing an observation deck at Point of Rocks Park
in Chesterfield, Va.
- Rebuilding two bridges on the Canal Trail in Roanoke
Rapids, N.C.
