Dominion - Special Statement

September 12, 2001

Dominion Operations Run Smoothly Following Attacks in New York, Washington, D.C.

  • Security measures increased at company locations.

RICHMOND, Va. – Operations ran smoothly overnight for Dominion following Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. The company put in place contingency plans and added security measures, although no unusual incidents were reported and service was maintained at normal levels.

“I am extremely proud of the men and women of Dominion,” said Thos. E. Capps, chairman, president and chief executive officer. “Yesterday was a day that tested us all. As the provider of an essential service to millions of people, we knew what we had to do, and we did it at a time of great emotional stress.”

The storm center system at Dominion Virginia Power/North Carolina Power and the gas operations command center for Dominion East Ohio, Dominion Peoples and Dominion Hope were activated. Dominion Transmission Gas Control increased its vigilance. All power-generating stations, as well as natural gas and oil production, were reported to be functioning as expected.

Security precautions were stepped up at all company locations, including additional security patrols.

There were some delays in responding to customer service calls in Northern Virginia because of extremely heavy vehicular traffic as most workers left the nation’s capital by mid-day Tuesday.

“While it is important to keep the victims of yesterday’s senseless tragedy in our thoughts and prayers, one of the best ways we can pay tribute to them is to continue doing our jobs to the best of our ability,” Capps said. “We need to show the people who perpetrated these heinous crimes, as well as the rest of the world, that we will not be robbed of our freedoms and our way of life.”

Dominion, headquartered in Richmond, Va., is one of the nation's largest producers of electric power and natural gas and serves 4 million retail customers in five states.
