Dominion Volunteers Refurbishing Greenhouse at Richmond Elementary School
RICHMOND, Va. - A Richmond
elementary school gets its courtyard area and greenhouse refurbished and restored
Wednesday thanks to the efforts of Dominion employees as part of the company's
2002 "Putting Our Energy to Work for the Environment" program.
Dominion volunteers will establish stations where students
can study the lifecycle of butterflies and plants, observe and record weather
data and grow their plants, transforming a school courtyard into the Summer
Hill Atrium for Education.
"Once again Dominion employees are demonstrating their
personal commitment to protecting the environment in a very tangible and specific
way," said Thos. E. Capps, chairman, president and chief executive officer.
"Dominion is proud of our employee initiative and the partnership we have
with Richmond as together we continue to make environmental protection and stewardship
a top priority."
The restoration and refurbishment of the school courtyard
and greenhouse is part of a nine-state volunteer effort by Dominion employees.
From Sept. 20 to mid-October, more than 750 volunteers will be working to help
beautify, restore and repair parks and other natural areas in the communities
where they live and work. This is the third year Dominion has supported an employee-driven
program called "Putting Our Energy to Work for the Environment."
"We are very appreciative to Dominion and its employees
for their commitment to this project at Summer Hill Elementary School,"
said Principal Almetia Kellar Strother, who visited with the Dominion volunteers
as they worked. "The students will gain invaluable hands-on experience
as they learn about science from this educational greenhouse."
In addition, a tree will be planted at the school and at
each of the sites in remembrance of the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11,
2001, terrorist attacks.
The Dominion Foundation supported the employees' volunteer
efforts by donating $2,500 per project to pay for supplies and materials.
