Dominion Generation Nuclear Units Achieve Record Performance
in 1999
RICHMOND, Va. -- Dominion Generation's North Anna and Surry
power stations set a new company record for nuclear-generated electricity in
1999.
The two-unit North Anna and Surry power stations generated
more than 28.3 million megawatt hours (mwh), a 4 percent increase over the previous
record of 27.2 million mwh, achieved in 1998.
The overall capacity factor of the four nuclear units in
1999 was 95.2 percent, an increase over the previous company record of 91.7
percent set in 1998. The capacity factor is the ratio of the energy generated
by the nuclear units compared to the total energy that could be generated if
the units ran at full power 100 percent of the time.
"Our performance in 1999 was the result of a continued
focus on safe operation and work practices, teamwork, excellent planning and
execution of work, and attention to detail," said James P. O'Hanlon, Dominion
Generation president and chief operating officer. "This translates into
safe, reliable and competitively priced electricity for our customers."
Dominion Generation operates two, 800-megawatt, Westinghouse
three-loop pressurized water reactors at Surry Power Station, located in Surry
County, Va. The company also operates two 900-MW Westinghouse pressurized water
reactors at its North Anna Power Station near Mineral.
In September 1999, North Anna set a new Westinghouse record
for simultaneous operation of two nuclear units. Both North Anna units operated
for 340 days until Unit 2 was shut down for a scheduled refueling outage. North
Anna and Surry have consistently ranked among the lowest cost producers of electricity
produced by nuclear energy plants in the United States, according to a database
and publishing unit of The McGraw-Hill Companies.
Dominion Generation manages the U.S. electric generating
power stations of Virginia Power and Dominion Energy, two subsidiaries of Dominion
Resources (NYSE: D). Information about Dominion Resources can be obtained on
