Virginia Power is the Largest Single Taxpayer in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Power paid $184.9 million in state and local taxes in 1999, making the utility the largest single taxpayer in the Commonwealth.

The 1999 payments included gross receipts taxes of almost $81.1 million, with $66 million paid to the state and $15.1 million paid to counties, cities, and towns. Virginia Power also paid almost $94.1 million in local government property taxes as well as about $9.8 million in various other taxes such as sales and use tax, unemployment taxes and workers' compensation.

The company's largest single property tax payment for the year, $11.15 million, went to Louisa County, home to the company's North Anna Power Station. Surry County had the second largest payment, $10.03 million; Fairfax County was third with $8.76 million. Chesterfield County received $7.57 million, the fourth highest amount.

Other localities receiving more than $1 million each were: City of Chesapeake, $6.21 million; Prince William County, $6.11 million; Bath County, $4.43 million; City of Virginia Beach, $3.92 million; City of Richmond, $3.63 million; Henrico County, $3.53 million; York County, $3.12; City of Norfolk, $2.34 million; Loudoun County, $1.66 million; City of Newport News, $1.61 million; Arlington County, $1.60 million; City of Hampton, $1.29 million; and the City of Alexandria, $1.14 million.
