Dominion Generation Plans to Build Combustion Turbine Peaking
Units
RICHMOND, Va. -- Dominion Generation Friday asked the State
Corporation Commission for permission to build and operate two natural gas-fired
combustion turbine units in Virginia.
The $97.5-million project would supply peaking power for
Virginia Power's 2 million customers during the hottest days of summer or coldest
days of winter. The two 160-megawatt units are expected to be operational by
June 2001.
"With the Virginia economy projected to continue growing
at a strong pace, these units are needed to meet customer demand in 2001,"
said Thomas F. Farrell II, Dominion Generation's chief executive officer.
The 290-acre site is located between Interstate 95 and U.S.
Route 1 near Ladysmith. The site was chosen for its proximity to natural gas
pipelines and high-voltage transmission lines.
Because the combustion turbines will use natural gas primarily
and operate only a limited number of days each year, any environmental impact
will be minimal. The company has applied for the needed environmental permits.
Local zoning permits were obtained in 1998 when the company considered the site
as a possible location for four combustion turbines that are being built in
Fauquier County.
Dominion Generation manages the electric generating plants
of Virginia Power and Dominion Energy, which are two subsidiaries of Dominion
Resources (NYSE: D). For more information on Dominion Resources, visit its website
