Contractor Fatally Injured During Restoration Effort
RICHMOND, Va. -- A lineman employed by Mastec North America
Inc. of Asheboro, N.C., was fatally injured Wednesday while restoring service
to Virginia Power customers.
Terry Fox, 19, was electrocuted when he came into contact
with a 7.6-kilovolt power line shortly before noon at the intersection of Lorraine
Station Road and Gaskins Road in west Richmond. Mastec was working under contract
to Virginia Power to restore service to the 285,000 Virginia Power customers
affected by the Super Bowl Sunday ice storm.
Virginia Power will investigate the accident. The federal
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was notified about the
accident.
"Virginia Power extends its sympathies to Terry's family
and to Mastec," said Tom Hyman, senior vice president-Electric Distribution.
"This tragedy is felt by linemen and their families everywhere."
Virginia Power is the principal subsidiary of Dominion
Resources Inc. (NYSE: D), an energy company with headquarters in Richmond.
