Virginia Power Honors 10 Employees for Volunteering Efforts

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Power Monday honored 10 employees who made a difference in their communities during 1999 by "giving the gift" of their volunteer abilities.

Virginia Power recognized the following employees at an awards ceremony in Richmond: Lin Bartlett, System office, Richmond Jennifer Culhane, System office, Innsbrook Technical Center, Richmond Bob Doniel, Commercial Operations Training Center, Chester Fred Emch, Woodbridge Earnest Greene, System office, Richmond Al Myers, South Boston Midge Nichols, Chesapeake Energy Center Rich Paraska, Kitty Hawk, N.C. Brenda Strang, System office, Richmond Susan Turner, Surry Power Station

The company also recognized as Project of the Year the efforts of its Eastern Region volunteers who helped in the flood relief programs in Virginia and eastern North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd.

Susan Allen, the wife of former Gov. George Allen and a strong supporter of corporate volunteerism, was the featured speaker at the ceremony.

Virginia Power's Employee Volunteer Program was organized 15 years ago to provide an effective way for the company's employees to make contributions of their time and effort to their communities. Since its inception, volunteers have contributed more than 1 million hours to projects ranging from cutting wood to helping the needy stay warm, to community recreational projects and working with local youth groups.

Nearly all volunteer hours are contributed on the employee's time, although company equipment may occasionally be used to support worthy projects. In November 1999, the volunteer program received the Governor's Community Service and Volunteerism Awards. The program was honored in 1989 with the President's Volunteer Action Award.
