Recovery Efforts Continue at Morgantown Energy
Associates’ Coal Facility
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Structural experts continued their
efforts Saturday to find a safe way to recover the body of an employee fatally
injured in the partial collapse of a coal silo at the Morgantown Energy Associates’
Beechurst Avenue power station.
Rescue workers found the employee’s body at about 5:30 p.m.
Friday. At the family’s request, Dominion is withholding the name of the fatally
injured employee. The recovery effort is proceeding slowly because of damage
to the 130-foot tall silo.
“Much like the rescue effort, the recovery effort
is a very delicate procedure. We are taking great care and have to be very meticulous
in our work,” said Jess Locklar, director of the power station.
The cause of the accident has not been determined. The employee
had been in his work area in the bottom third of the silo, which contains equipment
for blending coal before it is fed onto a conveyor and sent to the plant’s boiler.
The top two-thirds of the silo is used for storing coal. When the structure
gave way, coal from the top portion of the silo spilled into the work area.
The facility began operating in 1992 and produces electricity
for Allegheny Power and provides steam to West Virginia University.
Dominion Energy, a subsidiary of Dominion (NYSE: D), is majority
owner and operator of the power station. Dominion, headquartered in Richmond,
Va., is one of the nation’s largest producers of energy, with a production capability
of 2.7 trillion British thermal units of energy per day. For more information
