Dominion Aligns Nuclear Operations In Virginia,
Connecticut
RICHMOND, Va. – Dominion (NYSE: D) announced plans Tuesday
to align its nuclear operations in Virginia and Connecticut, focusing on enhanced
safety and reliability and positioning its nuclear energy unit for future growth.
As part of the restructuring, William R. Matthews, vice president
and senior nuclear executive at
Millstone Power Station in Connecticut, will assume additional interim responsibilities
overseeing the operations at Dominion's two Virginia nuclear power stations,
North Anna and Surry. He will continue to report to David A. Christian, senior
vice president-Nuclear Operations and Chief Nuclear Officer, and reside in Waterford,
Conn.
J. Alan Price, currently vice president-Nuclear Technical
Services at Millstone, will become site vice president-Millstone and be responsible
for day-to-day operations. He will report to Matthews, as will David A. Heacock,
site vice president-North Anna, and Richard H. Blount II, site vice president-Surry.
“These changes will fully align our operation and
support structures over our three power stations, enabling us to maintain our
sharp focus on safe operations and best practices in the nuclear industry,"
said Christian. "Our management model has been very successful for us. We look
forward to putting it to work in other places as we grow our business."
No layoffs are planned as part of this alignment, which take
effect Feb. 1.
Matthews, 54, a native of Dover, N.J., joined Virginia Power
in 1972 after serving seven years in the U.S. Navy. His first position with
the company was as assistant control room operator. He became a control room
operator in 1975 and was promoted to assistant shift supervisor in 1977, the
year he received his senior reactor operator license from the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission. In 1979, he was promoted to shift supervisor.
From 1980 to 1984, Matthews worked for Electronics Associates
Inc. of New Jersey. He was a senior member of the technical staff charged with
the design of the Nuclear Basic Principles Training Simulator.
Matthews returned to Virginia Power in 1984 as a supervisor-Operations
& Maintenance and was promoted to director-Operations & Maintenance in 1988.
In November of that year, he assumed the position of superintendent-Maintenance
at North Anna.
He was named assistant station manager in 1993, station manager
in 1996 and elected site vice president-North Anna in 1998. Matthews was named
vice president-Nuclear Operations for Dominion in 2000 and assumed his current
position in April 2001.
Price, a native of Richmond, received his bachelor’s degree
in civil engineering from Old Dominion University in 1979. He acquired his senior
reactor operator license in 1983.
Price has held numerous positions with Dominion since joining
the company in 1979. He served in a variety of posts at Surry Power Station,
including shift technical adviser, engineering supervisor, assistant shift supervisor
and manager-Quality Assurance. Price was assistant station manager for Nuclear
Safety & Licensing from 1990-95.
He worked with the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations
as assistant team manager from 1995 to 1996. In December 1996, Price assumed
the position of unit director-Unit 2 at Millstone Power Station under a management
agreement with Northeast Utilities. In November 1999, he was named manager-Nuclear
Engineering in Richmond. Price was promoted to vice president-Nuclear Technical
Services at Millstone in June 2001.
