Dominion Energy Supplies
Record Amount of Electricity
RICHMOND, Va. - Dominion Energy, the electric
generating unit of Dominion (NYSE: D), supplied a winter record one-hour amount
of power Thursday evening as unusually cold weather gripped the East Coast.
The company's diverse mix of power stations generated an unofficial
16,133 megawatts of electricity Thursday between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Although
the amount of electricity still must be verified, there is little doubt that
Dominion surpassed the previous wintertime peak of 15,072 megawatts generated
on Jan. 28, 2000.
"While we haven't had a cold spell like this for several
years, Dominion is ready to keep homes warm and lights on. We have adequate
supplies of electricity as we move further into the winter months," said
Thomas F. Farrell, II, president and chief executive officer.
Dominion, which also delivers electricity to more than 2 million
customers in Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, reminds those customers
that as energy usage increases, so will next month's electricity bills. The
following conservation tips will help customers reduce the impact of the cold
wave on their electricity bills:
Wear extra layers of clothing.
Open drapes for windows with a southern exposure in the daytime to maximize
the sun's heating potential and close them in the evening to help keep cold
drafts out.
Set the thermostat at the lowest temperature you find comfortable.
If you have a forced-air heating system, clean or replace the filter monthly
and keep heat vents open and unobstructed by furniture.
Lower the temperature setting on your electric water heater to 120 degrees
Fahrenheit.
Turn off all non-vital appliances and lights, such as stereos, VCRs, personal
computers, TVs and computers.
Dominion has a diversified and integrated energy portfolio
consisting of about 24,000 megawatts of generation. Dominion also serves more
than 3.8 million franchise natural gas and electric customers in five states.
