RICHMOND, Va. – Dominion (NYSE: D) electricity
customers set another record one-hour peak demand Wednesday. The peak of 18,897
megawatts between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. was the third in consecutive days and the
fourth in 9 days.
Record peaks from the company’s 2.2 million
customers in Virginia and northeast North Carolina this summer and the last
few days include:
June 14 — 17,291 megawatts
July 19 — 17,305 megawatts
July 25 — 17,688 megawatts
July 26 — 18,360 megawatts
July 27 — 18,897 megawatts
"Our generating, transmission and distribution
facilities have performed very well during this record high demand and our membership
in the PJM Interconnection has given us access to additional generating resources,"
said Jay L. Johnson, president and chief executive officer of Dominion Virginia
Power and Dominion North Carolina Power.
While the record levels of demand began easing
as the blistering temperatures cooled slightly, hundreds of company linemen
worked overnight and today restoring power to customers who lost service due
to high winds and lightning from thunderstorms. Crews restored more than 90,000
customers.
"We want to thank affected customers for
their patience and all of our customers for using energy wisely during this
period of record demand," said Johnson. "We also want to thank our
employees, who’ve put in some very long, hot hours this week."
