Dominion Reviewing Reactor Shutdown At Kewaunee
Power Station
CARLTON, Wis. – Kewaunee Power Station
was manually shut down Wednesday night after a feedwater pump on the non-nuclear
side of the station shut off.
The unit was in the process of being shut down
and was at 35 percent power at the time of the event. It remained in a safe
condition throughout.
The unit was being shut down so a small leak
in a service water line on the non-nuclear side of the station could be repaired.
As a conservative measure, the station declared
an alert shortly before 9 p.m. and federal and state officials were notified.
An alert is the next to least serious of four emergency categories in the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission's rating system. The alert ended about 12:25 a.m. Central
Time.
No release of radioactive material occurred beyond
normal, minor releases associated with routine plant operations. There was no
danger to the public or plant workers.
A feedwater pump supplies water to the steam
generator for steam production to run the turbine generator, which generates
electricity.
