Dominion Peoples Honors Three Local African-American Students With the Award of Achievement Collegiate Grant

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Dominion Peoples will honor three local African-American high school students with its 2001 Award of Achievement Collegiate Grant.

This year’s recipients are:

  • Samantha Clancy – winner of the $3,000 first place grant. Samantha is a graduate of Perry Traditional Academy. Samantha plans to attend the University of Richmond, Virginia Tech or the University of Pittsburgh to obtain a degree in political science with a minor in Spanish.

  • Alisha Scales – winner of the $2,000 second place grant. Alisha is a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School. Alisha ranked first in her graduating class and plans to attend either Penn State or Temple University in the fall.

  • Michelle Robinson – winner of the $1,000 third place grant. Michelle is a graduate of George Westinghouse High School. Michelle plans to attend Spelman College or the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a degree in biochemistry.

Ed Roach, chief executive officer for Dominion Delivery, said the students clearly demonstrate academic leadership and are positive role models for all youth.

"Dominion Peoples is pleased to award these grants to such deserving and talented individuals," Roach said. "The Award of Achievement allows Dominion Peoples to ease some of the financial burden of attending college and reward those seeking a higher education."

This marks the thirteenth year for the Award of Achievement Collegiate Grant Competition. Since the Award of Achievement was started, Dominion Peoples has provided over $50,000 in scholarship funds to deserving students. Past winners continue to aim for excellence by pursuing masters and doctorate degrees, assuming leadership positions in both private and public work environments and traveling to study abroad in other countries.

The three winners were selected from a field of 89 applicants. From those, an independent review committee looked at the students' academic profiles and letters of recommendation and chose five finalists for a personal interview. Of the five interviews, three winners were selected.

Dominion Peoples is a subsidiary of Dominion, one of the nation’s largest producers of energy. Dominion, headquartered in Richmond, Va., serves 3.8 million retail natural gas and electric customers.
