January 2024
A new year message from our president, Ed Baine.
This article is about:
“Throughout 2024 and beyond, we are dedicated to our vital mission. Our goal is to exceed your expectations – and we will never stop trying.”
In 2023, safety remained our most important core value. You counted on us to power your every day, and we were there for you.
On occasions when storms affected our communities, we worked around the clock to restore your service as safely as possible. When a tornado touched down in Nash County, North Carolina, causing catastrophic damage in July, we rebuilt and reenergized major power lines in just four days. Additionally, in September, when 175,000 customers experienced power outages during Tropical Storm Ophelia, we had more than 800 bucket trucks in the field restoring power, even before the wind stopped blowing.
When temperatures soared outside and our customers needed us most, we ensured our generating units and the grid performed well. We hit four new summer records for peak demand – two in July and two in September.
Our mission of providing reliable, affordable, and increasingly clean energy that powers your every day was at the forefront of all of our work to serve you. We embraced an all-of-the-above energy mix to ensure reliable service – installing additional solar and energy storage, progressing on-time and on-budget with the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, working to extend the life of our existing power stations, most notably our nuclear units, and exploring new small modular reactors, hydrogen, and gas peaking units for the hottest or coldest days when power demand is high.
We made historic investments in the grid to accommodate the significant growth in customers, electric demand, and new renewable sources of power in the communities we serve. We also placed additional outage-prone distribution lines underground in neighborhoods.
To detect power outages and collect meter readings remotely, we installed even more smart meters toward our goal of all our customers having access to this technology. We also helped bring high-speed broadband to unserved and underserved communities in Virginia.
We helped thousands of customers pay their energy bills and weatherize their homes through assistance programs, such as EnergyShare.
We also provided no-cost energy-efficient upgrades and solar panels to income-and-age-qualifying customers.
In April, we launched a new customer information platform to replace our obsolete billing system and upgrade our online and mobile apps with new technology that among other benefits works more seamlessly with the new smart meters.
Please know that our customers are at the core of all we do. These new systems and features can be leveraged in the future – together with our investments in diverse energy sources and the grid – to serve all of us well.
Throughout 2024 and beyond, we are dedicated to our vital mission. Our goal is to exceed your expectations – and we will never stop trying.
Sincerely,
Edward H. Baine
