What is a back-feed?
A back-feed occurs when electric power from a generator is fed from a home or business, back onto utility power lines. This occurs when generators are connected incorrectly or "jury-rigged" using a non-code-approved method.

What appliances can I run on a portable generator?
You should be able to operate most of your home's appliances, but not all simultaneously. It can't, however, handle the start up needs for heat pumps or central air conditioning systems.

Top

Where should a portable generator be located when in use?
The generator should always be placed outdoors on a level, firm surface. Never operate a portable generator indoors, in a garage or any attached structure as carbon monoxide poisoning may occur. Always operate your generator away from open windows, doors and combustibles. Refer to your owner's manual for complete operating instructions.

Is there any potential for damage to my appliances?
There is no risk of damage from any approved interconnection/transfer device. You should take care when selecting your generator to make sure you're buying a high quality generator.

What happens when utility power is restored?
With the Connection Hub, you will automatically switch back to utility power once it's restored. Your generator will continue to run, so you will need to turn it off and unplug the power cord. With the Eight-Circuit Sub-Panel, the generator will remain your power source until you turn it off, unplug it, and flip the transfer breaker.

Top

What if I overload the generator?
Your generator should have a circuit breaker that will activate in the event of an overload. If it doesn't have this feature, it isn't suitable for use with the Connection Hub.

Top

What is an interconnection device?
An interconnection device allows you to connect a portable generator to your home's electrical system, while simultaneously disconnecting you from the utility grid. This eliminates any chance of a dangerous back-feed.

Top

How can I tell what type of interconnection device I need?
The type of device you need is based on two items: the generator size and/or the size of your electric service. The Connection Hub is applicable for service sizes of 200 amps and less, and generators up to 12,000 Watts. An Eight-Circuit Sub-Panel must be used for all services greater than 200 amps, regardless of the generator size. To determine the size of your service, check the main breaker size on your electric panel. As a rule of thumb, if you have one panel box, your service size is 200 amps or less. If you're still not sure, look for the service size indicator on the face of your electric meter (left side, middle).

Top

What happens if I lose or damage the interconnection device cord?
You can buy a new cord by calling 1-877-796-0963. Replacement prices are: 10-foot, $250.00; 20-foot, $300.00 and 50-foot, $450.00.

How is the Connection Hub different from a transfer switch or emergency sub-panel?
The Connection Hub is installed at your electric meter in less than 30 minutes by a utility technician or authorized subcontractor. Because it's installed at the meter, it provides you with the flexibility to select appliances through your existing circuit panel, changing those selections as often as you like.

What size generator do I need to use with the Connection Hub?
It can accommodate generators that produce up to 12,000 Watts (12 kW) continuously. The generator needs to have single power take off, 120/240 volt output and should have a four-wire 30 or 50-amp receptacle. For most homes this should be sufficient to operate critical household appliances during a power outage. If you don't already own a generator, you can buy one from us. We offer a variety of convenient systems to meet any need or budget.

Top

How quickly can the Connection Hub be installed?
Once your payment has been received, we can usually install it and/or the complete portable generator package within 30 days.

Top

If I already have Dominion Virginia Power's Surge Protection Service can I still have it installed?
Yes. Because the Connection Hub installs behind the electric meter just like the whole-house surge device, Dominion Virginia Power will install a new hardwired, whole-house surge device on the side of the meter base. Your surge protection coverage will be just as effective and all manufacturer warranties will be the same.

Top

How do I operate my generator with the Connection Hub?
There are four easy steps: 1) Turn off all breakers. 2) Plug in the generator. 3) Start the generator. 4) Switch on applicable breakers for the items you want to run(based on capacity of generator).

Top

What maintenance is required?
None.

Top

What happens if the Connection Hub has a problem?
For a fee, Dominion Virginia Power will remove the device and repair it. However, the Connection Hub was designed to meet the stringent standards and demands of utilities. We are confident this product is extremely reliable.

Top

Who owns the Connection Hub?
Once you have paid for the device, you own it. However, because it's installed on Dominion Virginia Power's meter base, you must call us to have it removed or transferred to a new home.

Top

Can I take it to my next home?
For $129, Dominion Virginia Power will move the device to your new home (if located in our service territory), or remove it for your transport to your new home/utility. If your new home's service size is greater than 200 amps, the Connection Hub cannot be installed. In this case you may wish to sell it with the home.

Top

How long does the typical installation take?
Dominion keeps a large inventory of generators in stock to minimize installation time. However, the average installation can take about 40 days by the time all inspections are done. Individual installations can take longer--especially if the natural gas meter needs upgrading to meet the gas requirements of the generator.

Top

Who will perform maintenance on my generator?
Dominion offers affordable maintenance plans for all the generators we sell. You will receive annual reminders and solicitations, or if you need it sooner, simply call our toll-free generator service number: 1-866-824-2378.

How much do the different generators cost to operate?
A 7kW generator costs less than $1/month for the exercise cycle and about $1/hour during an outage, while a 45kW costs about $2/month for the exercise cycle and a little over $4/hour during an outage. These outage estimates are based on average operation at 50% generator capacity and can vary up or down based on actual connected load and homeowner behavior.
