2012

Electric Power Research Institute:  Technology Transfer Award
Two Dominion Virginia Power employees, Supriya Jarugumilli, engineer II and John Klotz, engineer III, received the Technology Transfer Award from the Electric Power Research Institute for their efforts and participation in a collaborative industry project that identified issues arising from corrosion in underground steel structures. The Electric Power Research Institute is an independent, non-profit group that performs research, development and demonstration in the electricity industry.
 

Edison Electric Institute: Emergency Recovery Award
Dominion Virginia Power received Edison Electric Institute’s Emergency Recovery Award for prompt and efficient power restoration after Hurricane Irene, which caused significant damage to Dominion Virginia Power's Central and Southeastern service territories. This award is presented annually to EEI member companies who have shown outstanding efforts to restore power following severe weather and natural disasters.
 

Southeastern Electric Exchange: Industry Excellence Award, Substation
Dominion Virginia Power won the Industry Excellence Award in the substation category for “Surry Nuclear Power Station Switchyard: Tornado Restoration.” This award highlighted the power station’s innovative and efficient emergency equipment and the outstanding response of personnel to quickly restore power after a tornado touched down in the station’s switchyard, causing the loss of off-site power. Southeastern Electric Exchange issues Industry Excellence Awards annually to member companies who stand out above the rest in achievements, innovation, improvements, requirements met, and technical complexity.
 

Southeastern Electric Exchange: Industry Excellence Award, Customer Service/Billing
Dominion Virginia Power won the Industry Excellence Award in the customer service and billing category for “Dominion Virginia Power Energy Assistance Customer Assistance.” The Energy Assistance Outreach team educates customers about the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), state funding and other energy-assistance programs. The team also works directly with nonprofit organizations and social services to provide the most assistance possible to Dominion customers. Their efforts have brought in more energy-assistance dollars than previous years when LIHEAP funds were at their peak. Public Relations Society Association: Brief Events and Observations Award of Merit
Dominion Virginia Power won the Award of Merit at the 2012 Virginia Public Relations Awards Ceremony under the Brief Events and Observations category for the Dominion Trail Mix: a signature event in Northern Virginia.  The Dominion Trail Mix is an outdoor community event that combines a trail cleanup, race and community festival to highlight healthy living and environmental stewardship along the Washington & Old Dominion Trail.
 

Public Relations Society Association: Crisis Communication Award of Merit
Dominion Virginia Power won the Award of Merit at the 2012 Virginia Public Relations Awards Ceremony under the Crisis Communication category for its timely communication efforts in response to the Aug. 23, 2011 Central Virginia earthquake, which forced an unusual shutdown of the North Anna Nuclear Power Station.
 

Public Relations Society Association: Social Media Award of Merit
Dominion Virginia Power won the Award of Merit at the 2012 Virginia Public Relations Awards Ceremony under the Social Media category for its Facebook page that launched during Hurricane Irene, which hit the Dominion territories along the east coast in August 2011.

Southeastern Electric Exchange: Industry Excellence Award, Distribution
Dominion Virginia Power’s Distribution group received an award for its project, “The Overvoltage Protector: A Simple Solution to a Complex Problem.” The research project developed a more cost-effective solution to prevent the damage caused when wires make contact with pole lines that have circuits of different voltages. Southeastern Electric Exchange: Industry Excellence Award, Transmission
Dominion Virginia Power received an award for its work surrounding the “Pleasant View to Hamilton 230kV Hybrid Transmission Line” project. The line was built from the company’s existing substation on 10 miles of new overhead right-of-way along the Leesburg Bypass as well as two miles of underground cable along the scenic Washington & Old Dominion Trail, where the company has existing right-of-way. Dominion’s project team reinvented its approach for working with affected communities to get the Pleasant View-to-Hamilton line built and energized. The team collaborated with stakeholders to keep residents well informed, set up a robust project website with updated construction information, and built a two-mile detour to minimize impact for trail users during construction. President’s Safety Award
The employees at Dominion’s Castlewood Road facility in Richmond received the President’s Safety Award for achieving 3,000 days—equal to more than eight years—without a lost-time or restricted-duty day accident. They were recognized for prolonged, outstanding safety efforts by Steve Rogers, president of Dominion’s Services Company.
 

Arbor Day Foundation: Recognized Dominion Virginia Power as a Tree Line USA Utility
Dominion Virginia Power has been named a “Tree Line USA” utility by the Arbor Day Foundation for the company’s practices aimed at protecting and enhancing America’s urban forests. This is the first year Dominion has earned this title. The Tree Line USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with individual state forestry agencies. It honors utility companies that take great measures to provide quality tree care. All Tree Line USA utilities must meet three requirements: a program of quality tree care; annual worker training in quality tree-care practices; and a tree planting and public education program, such as Project PlantIt!

This award is presented annually to EEI member companies who have shown outstanding efforts to restore power following severe weather and natural disasters.
 

Chartwell Inc.: Best in Class Award
Dominion Virginia Power’s Customer Service Organization recently received a Best in Class Award for its Customer Care Center’s Customer Operations Procedures Specialist, or COPS, program. The award was given by Chartwell Inc., an independent information firm that produces in-depth research on customer-facing issues within the utility industry. Chartwell recognizes excellence in areas that influence customers' overall experience with their utility.
 

Customer Service Week: Expanding Excellence Award
Dominion Virginia Power’s first web-based knowledge repository, Wiki-D, received Customer Service Week’s Expanding Excellence Award. Internally, Wiki-D also received the Dominion Design for Six Sigma Project of the Year Award in 2010.
