Recreation Resources - Roanoke Rapids and Gaston

A wide variety of recreational resources are available on or near Lake Gaston and Roanoke Rapids Lake. This page provides a listing of recreation areas developed in accordance with Dominion North Carolina Power's FERC Hydropower license (Article 423 Recreation Plan).

Roanoke Rapids Day Use Area

Location: 100 Oakwood Drive, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Purpose: Lakeside park, daylight recreation; accessible

Amenities: Large parking area, ½ mile walking trail, fishing pier, two large picnic pavilions which can be reserved, playground, volleyball, horseshoe pits, Frisbee golf, sand beach and roped swimming area (SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK), bathrooms, changing rooms and picnic tables.

Roanoke Rapids Tailrace Fishing Area

Location: 100 Oakwood Drive, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Purpose: Provide access to the Roanoke Rapids dam tailrace for fishing; not accessible

Amenities: Picnic tables and a foot bridge across the tailrace accessing the bypassed reach.

Tailrace Bank Fishing Area 

Roanoke Canal Trail and Museum

Location: West end termination of canal trail, 100 Oakwood Drive, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Purpose: Restored transportation canal path and museum; accessible

Amenities: Canal’s west end terminus is at the Roanoke Rapids Day Use Area. Walking, jogging and bicycling-friendly path. Roanoke River Canal Museum is located 1.5 miles east of the Roanoke Rapids Day Use Area parking lot. Informational kiosks and interpretative signs are located along the pathway.

Lake Gaston Day Use Area

Location: North end of Jack Brown Road, Littleton, NC.

Purpose: Lakeside park, daylight recreation; accessible

Amenities: Large parking area, sand beach and roped swimming area (SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK), bathrooms, changing rooms and picnic tables, horseshoe pits.

Location: North end of Jack Brown Road, Littleton, NC.

Purpose: Provide access to the Gaston dam tailrace for fishing; accessible

Amenities: Parking and accessible path to tailrace

Location: East end of Salmon Landing Road, Littleton, NC.

Purpose: Provide bank side fishing on Lake Gaston; accessible

Amenities: Parking, fishing pier

NOCARVA Water to Land Use Area

Location: Water access only, peninsula at the mouth of Six Pound Creek, south side of Lake Gaston, about mid lake, 36o53’68”N x 78o05’34”W

Purpose: To provide on shore passive recreation and rest area.

Amenities: Boat dock, picnic tables, restroom.

NOCARVA Water to Land Use Area 

 

Waterfowl Management Area

Location: US Route 1, Mecklenburg County, VA, northwest side of bridge crossing of Lake Gaston.

Purpose: To provide habitat for migratory waterfowl and waterfowl hunting opportunity

Amenities: Parking, water control cofferdam, approximately 170 acres of managed wetlands.

Miles Creek Bank Fishing Area

Location: Intersection of Route 1 and Redlawn Road, Mecklenburg County, VA.

Purpose: Provide bank side fishing on Lake Gaston; accessible

Amenities: Parking, accessible path to Miles Creek.

North Side Gaston Dam Bank Fishing Area

Location: South end of Webb’s Gate Road, Northampton County, NC.

Purpose: Provide bank side fishing on Lake Gaston; accessible

Amenities: Parking, accessible path to Lake Gaston, picnic table.

Whitewater

Dominion provides controlled releases from the Roanoke Rapids dam on weekends between June 16 and October 31 to enhance whitewater conditions between the dam and the NC Wildlife Resources boat ramp in Weldon, NC.

Boat Landings

The North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries operate and maintain three boat landings on the Roanoke Rapids Lake six boat landings on Lake Gaston and one boat landing on the Roanoke River just east of the Roanoke Rapids dam tailrace.
