Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up for NC GreenPower?

Sign up here or call us at 1-866-DOM-HELP (1-866-366-4357).

How many blocks of energy may I purchase?

If you sign up for the $4.00 per block of renewable energy option or the $4.00 per block of carbon offset option, you may add as many blocks as you like. If you choose the $2.50 per block of renewable energy option, you must add a minimum of 100 blocks, which would be $250.00.

Is my contribution to NC GreenPower tax deductible?

Contributions to NC GreenPower may be tax deductible. You should check with an accountant to determine if you qualify for a deduction.

Does my contribution to NC GreenPower offset my regular electric bill?

No. Your contribution is a voluntary addition to the amount on your regular bill. The blocks you add are used to reduce carbon emissions or purchase green power, which is more expensive than energy generated from fossil fuels. That is why your payment to NC GreenPower is tax deductible.

How does the green power get to my home?

When you contribute to the NC GreenPower renewable energy option, you are not actually purchasing energy for your home. Each block purchased means that 100 kilowatt-hours of energy produced by burning fossil fuels will be replaced by 100 kilowatt-hours of energy produced from cleaner, greener renewable energy sources.

How are carbon emissions reduced if I choose the Carbon Offset option?

When you choose the Carbon Offset option, your payment is a subsidy paid to a project owner or purchased from the market for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

How will I pay for my block contributions?

Once you sign up to contribute to NC GreenPower, the additional amount will appear on your regular monthly Dominion bill. No separate payment is needed.

Do I have to purchase all of my power through the NC GreenPower program? If I don't use 100 kilowatt-hours during a month, what happens to the extra kilowatt-hours I purchased through the GreenPower program?

You do not have to purchase enough NC GreenPower to cover your monthly usage. The number of blocks purchased is not directly related to the amount of energy you actually use. You would be billed for the energy you use and for the number of blocks you have decided to purchase through the NC GreenPower program.

How does this price compare to what I currently pay Dominion North Carolina Power?

When you sign up for the option priced at $4.00, each block adds 4 cents to the rate you are paying per kilowatt-hour. When you sign up for the option priced at $2.50, each block adds 2.5 cents to the rate you are paying per kilowatt-hour.

Can I contribute directly to the NC GreenPower program?

Yes. Visit for instructions on making a direct contribution.

Can I buy part of a block?

No. The program is limited to the purchase of whole blocks.

If I sign up for this program, when will it start and how long will it last?

Once you enroll, billing for NC GreenPower will start with your next monthly bill. You will continue to be billed for the blocks you agree to purchase until you notify us to remove you from the program.

If the current sources of energy are not clean, why doesn't Dominion North Carolina Power use clean sources without this program?

Dominion North Carolina Power is committed to providing safe reliable energy to its customers at the lowest possible price.
