Non-Residential Energy Audit Program FAQs

Program Overview

What is Dominion Virginia Power’s Non-Residential Energy Audit program?

A participating contractor performs an onsite Energy Audit of a non-residential customer’s facility. You will receive a personalized report showing the projected energy and potential cost savings you could receive by implementing the energy efficiency improvements identified during the audit.

Upon documented completion of some or all of the personalized recommended energy efficiency improvements, a portion of the audit value will be refunded, up to the full amount.

What types of measures can receive incentives as part of the Non-Residential Energy Audit program?

The Non-Residential Energy Audit program offers incentives for the installation of a variety of energy efficiency improvements. Here's a complete list of approved measures and incentives.

Do I have to use a contractor listed on the site to perform the audit?

Yes. Only qualified measures performed by a contractor participating in Dominion’s Contractor Network will be eligible for incentives.

Participation and Eligibility

Why should I participate?

The Energy Audit program provides you with:

  • an on-site analysis of your energy use.
  • a report containing customer-specific recommendations to reduce your business’ energy usage.
  • financial incentives that help cover a portion of the audit value, up to the full amount, for recommended energy efficiency improvements completed.
  • equipment installation scheduled at your convenience.
What are the steps to participate?

Contact a local participating contractor (here's a list).

You will be contacted by the contractor to schedule the audit for a time that is convenient for you.

On the day of your appointment, the contractor will perform the following actions:

  • Conduct a 2-3 hour walkthrough of your facility
  • Generate a personalized Energy Audit Report that recommends certain direct install measures and projects more advanced savings opportunities you can take advantage of.
  • Submit the rebate form for work completed on-site on your behalf, and provide you with instructions for submitting rebates for work you might choose to have completed at a later date (within six months of the audit).
Who is eligible to participate?
This program is open to Dominion Virginia Power business customers who have a demand of 10 megawatts or less and have not opted out of participation.  Customers must be responsible for their own electric bill and either be the owner of the building, or be able to secure permission from the building owner to have the audit conducted and identified improvements completed.  Customers with both electric and gas equipment are eligible to receive rebates on some of the suggested improvements.
If don’t own the building, can I still participate?

Yes. If you are responsible for the electric bill and are either the owner of the building or reasonably able to secure permission from the building owner to have the audit conducted and identified improvements completed.

Will it cost me anything to participate?

The participating contractor you choose to perform the audit will provide the cost for performing the audit as well as any recommended measures. Upon completion of the work, a rebate will be submitted on your behalf, so your out-of-pocket cost will vary depending upon the rebates you qualify for based on the measures you had installed.

Can I participate in this program and then choose to Opt Out shortly thereafter?

No.  If you participate in a program and receive a rebate, you cannot Opt Out for three years following the year of participation.

Example: Participation takes place in 2013, customer cannot Opt Out in years 2014, 2015, 2016 and will regain the ability to file an application for the 2017 season between Jan. 1, 2017 and March 1, 2017, provided the demand requirements are also met.

Rebate Information

Do I have to have the recommended improvements completed the same day as the energy audit in order to qualify for a rebate?

No, you have up to six months to have recommended improvements completed after the audit. On the day of your audit, your contractor will provide you with instructions for submitting rebates for work you choose to have completed at a later date (but within six months of the audit).

What rebates can I earn?

The rebate amount is based on the measures installed; however, the average incentive is typically around $1,800.  Note:

  • Measures not completed during the audit can be rebated up to six months after the audit is completed.
  • One audit per location.
  • Rebate not to exceed the calculated value of the audit, which is based on the previous energy usage.
When will I receive my rebate?

Please allow up to 90 days from the date all required information is received to process your rebate. Payment will be issued to the account holder and mailing address on record with Dominion - unless the customer has authorized the rebate to be paid to the contractor.

It is the responsibility of the customer to assure that all requirements for the rebate are met. Failure to provide any of the required information will delay processing of your application and could result in non-payment.

How can I check the status of my rebate?

Upon submission of your rebate, an email will be sent to the email address provided on the rebate form confirming the rebate has been submitted for processing. You may also call 1-888-366-8280 to check the status of your rebate.
