Virginia Energy Assistance

Community Resources

If you are past due on your electric bill or facing disconnection of your electric service, dialing 2-1-1 can provide free information on available services in your community. In addition to locating help with utility needs, 2-1-1 call specialists can provide referrals to resources for child care, elder care, housing assistance and training. To speak with a call specialist dial 2-1-1 or visit Help is available 24 hours a day.

Help is Available

The Virginia Department of Social Services offers three ways to assist customers with paying their energy bills.

  • Fuel Assistance - helps eligible households with the costs of heating their homes. (Applications are accepted from the second Tuesday in October through the second Friday in November.)
  • Crisis Assistance - helps households in heating emergency situations with primary heat security deposits, utility heating bills, repair/replacement of heating equipment, primary heating fuel or emergency shelter. (Applications are accepted from November 1 through March 15.)
  • Cooling Assistance - helps with cooling equipment purchases or repairs and also with the electric bill. (Applications are accepted from June 15 through August 15. Assistance is based on the availability of funds.)

For additional information and to screen for eligibility and/or apply online through CommonHelp, visit Virginia Department of Social Services website.

EnergyShare pays for any type of heating bill (oil, wood, kerosene, natural gas or electricity) or cooling bill. The program provides a one-time payment of last resort for those who have exhausted other forms of assistance or who do not qualify for such help.
